Transcona has always been a community that remembers its veterans. You see it at the Cenotaph, in the Field of Honour, and in the stories of local veterans like Paul Martin. Their service is part of Transcona’s history, and it deserves more than a once a year thank you.
I will push to keep Field of Honour burials free for veterans and service members, and make sure Winnipeg properly maintains the Fields of Honour at Brookside and Transcona cemeteries. These places should be treated with dignity and respect.
I will also push for free transit for veterans and current serving CAF members with valid military identification. Winnipeg already recognizes veterans with free transit on Remembrance Day. I believe that respect should go further.
On Fridays, for Remember Everyone Deployed (RED) day, I will support a “RED Recreation Pass” so veterans and current serving CAF members can access City pools, fitness facilities, public skating, and recreation programming for at a discount. I will also work with local businesses to encourage veteran discounts in the community.
Transcona should also have a proper gathering place on Veterans Way. I will work with veterans to create a monument on the dirt mound off Transcona Boulevard, shaped by the people it is meant to honour.
I will form a Veterans Advisory Team so veterans have a direct voice at City Hall through my office. They should not have to fight to be heard.
I will also push for a registered veteran parking mirror hanger, so veterans can use Winnipeg’s existing veteran parking benefits without needing veteran licence plates. It is a simple change that would make the program fairer and easier to use.
Campaigns are won by neighbours helping neighbours. If you believe Transcona deserves bridge building leadership, safer streets, better basics, and smart growth that puts residents first, I’d be grateful for your support.
